Washington DC PhotoWalk

Washington DC Photowalk - March 8, 2008

I am looking for interested parties who want to participate in a PhotoWalk in the Washington DC area. Not the monuments and buildings that have been shot by oh so many tourists (including me) but some of the less frequented, but just as interesting locations around the city. I haven’t nailed down a date or time or route yet but I am looking at March 8th. I am already counting in Mike & Mike but I would love to hear from others in the area that are interested. As I said, the date and time is not set so if you have alternate suggestions, please let me know. I was just over at Photowalking.org looking at the wrap-up from the Bethesda photowalk this past weekend and they had 26 photographers show up, including Scott Sherman from the Digital Photography Show Podcast.

In conjunction with the walk, I have set up a DC Photowalk Flickr Group to upload images and discuss the walk (click here to go to the group). Not sure what a photowalk is? It’s really pretty simple, grab your camera and any other photogear you might find essential, your comfortable walking shoes, and a spirit of adventure. Add some other enthusiastic photographers, an interesting location, and start clicking. That’s about all there is to it. It’s really just a way to get out, take some photos of things you find interesting along the way and then share them with others that share your passion. No critiques, just mutual inspiration and maybe at the end, a little coffee and pie. Mmmmmm, pie! So if you are interested, drop me a comment here on the blog or head on over to the Flickr Group. The more, the merrier.

* Update – I have sent email invitations to the Northern Virginia Photographic Society and the Silver Spring Camera Club. If you are aware of, or belong to any local camera club, please let me know so that I can offer them an invitation.

FINALIZED PLANS – All of the details for the photowalk have now been finalized.  The information is available on the Flick Group site located at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/dcphotowalk/   You can also obtain all of the details on my Feb. 22 post by clicking here.  Scroll to the bottom of the post for the information.  Hope to see you there.

Did you clear my attendance with my boss? I’ll have to see what’s going on but I think that date will be ok. What kind of pie will there be? I like blueberry.

I spotted the Bethesda results too and thought about organizing a DC one myself. Then I saw this…

    Count me in.

You guys are welcome to write up an announcement for Photowalking.org! Email me and we can work out the details.

Helping people organize and promote their photowalks is exactly what I do with Photowalking.org.

    Jeff,

It’s great to see the momentum building on the DC photowalk front. Count me in. Feel free to send me an email and I can give you some lessons learned from the Bethesda photowalk.

One potential location is the Adams Morgan area. The various multi-color old door fronts and buildings would be a good location for a walk.

It’s great to see the local photowalks and strobist meetups really taking off! Count me in.

  • Jessyca

Count me in. This sounds just what I’ve been looking for.

  • Mike Palmer

I 2nd that Adams Morgan idea, I have been meaning to get down there since I moved back to the area.

  • DaveS

Adams Morgan could be great. Maybe start at Meridian Hill Park, then cut over? There’s a great mix of architecture and people up that way, either down Euclid for the residential track or Columbia for a more urban one.

Thanks for organizing this. It’s a cool idea doing this with fellow photo enthusiasts. I belong to the SSCC (Silver Spring Camera Club) and just joined the Gaithersburg Camera Club… It will be great if you can extend the invitation to them. I can pass this along, too. Please count me in plus perhaps 5 more photographers will be coming with me!

Just for clarification purposes, I am not buying pie for everyone that shows up. Just in case that’s a make or break point for you. :-)

Will this be a rain (thunderstorm) or Shine event?

  • http://www.revellphotography.com jeff

I will be there rain or shine, although I think rain is the more likely of the two. I have been watching the forecast and I’m hopeful that the rain will push off to the South by the afternoon. Either way, if you plan on going, dress appropriately and look for me at the top of the Metro escalator.

Hey Jeff, I’m gonna have to bail on the photowalk today, unfortunately… It’s not the weather… My parents surprised me last night by coming into town for the DCist show so I will be hanging with them today.

We’ll definitely get together on the next walk though… I’m thinking, maybe, a Cherry Blossom Photowalk?? :-)

    Have fun and stay dry!!

    Hi Jeff & everyone else,
I had a blast today. I never thought of “shooting” in an alley before. It was different and a lot of fun. Thanks for the challenging shoot tips. Those two hours just flew by. We just HAVE to do this again. Thanks again.

I can’t believe I missed this. I shoot in DC all the time, am an adams morgan regular and a devout fan of photoshop TV. Hope next time will be sooner rather than later!

We have just released our PhotoWalkIdeas in the iTunes Store to help photographers on photo walks. The iPhone app lets you choose a theme (nature, urban, people, etc.), a level of difficulty, and the number of ideas you want. The app then randomly selects the ideas from its dictionary of 5,000 words and phrases, and you have ideas to look for on your walk.

I plan to be in DC mid April of 2011 and would love to join up with a walk around that period of time. Let me know your plans and dates and I will try to hook up. I’m from Northern CA.
