If you are like me, you take great care of your photo equipment. You clean your lenses and sensor so that everything is in great working order. You probably take great care of your images too. You are careful to make back-ups so that you can safeguard against catastrophe. But here’s a question, do you do any maintenance on your back-up gear? I hate to admit it but I used to never give it a second thought. I would go about my business of backing all my images to my Drobo, never realizing that the very system I was entrusting my precious images to was being ravaged by dust (see image below).
So what’s wrong with a little dust? Plenty, if you are an electronic component. A little dust is pretty harmless but if you let it accumulate, it can clog air vents and coat electrical components, leading to overheating and sudden death. Luckily, you can solve this problem by spending about $1 for a can of air. That’s right, a little canned air can dislodge caked on dust and clear it from the device, leaving it cleaner and cooler.
So the next time you are walking through your local hardware, office supply, or Best Buy, see if you can’t find a few cans of air to keep near your computer system and then give a little blast every now and then. Your electronics will thank you by working harder and longer.
