The New Kelby Training App

I was one of the beta testers for the Kelby Online Training site so I have watched it grow from something that was good to something great over the past couple of years. So when my buddy Scott called me and told me that the iPhone/iPad app had finally been submitted to Apple for review, I was truly excited. When it finally hit the app store and I downloaded it, I was not disappointed. In fact, it held a surprise for me that was unexpected but what I believe is one of its best features.

First, let me give you a little tour of the app if you have not yet seen it in action. When you first open the app you will be prompted to put in your username and password.

Once you are logged in, you can start searching for the class that you want to watch. You can browse classes by Newly Added, Photography, Creative, or check out all courses by tapping one of the browser buttons.

Once you find the class in the list, just tap on it and it opens in the play window on the right-hand side.

Once the video starts, you can skip through the chapters and scrub though the videos. The display works in both the horizontal and vertical format and the app smoothly rearranges things to fit perfectly on your screen while keeping the video looking sharp.

Where the app really shines in when you take it to full-screen mode, especially on the iPad. The picture quality is great!.

So remember when I said there was one feature that just blew me away, well it has to do with the reason that you need to download iOS 4.3.3. And that’s because 4.3.3 allows your device to use AirPlay. That means that you can send the video from your device to your TV via an Apple TV.

I was truly amazed when I fired this up and watched a training video through the AppleTV. The video was smooth and seeing it on the big screen was a fantastic experience.

Here’s why I love this feature. When I watch a training video on photoshop or editing, I like to follow along on my computer, especially when the class offers work files. The problem is that it was hard to watch the Kelby Training videos on my laptop and follow along with the class. Now I can simply watch the video on my iPad or send it to my TV via the AppleTV and happily follow along on my computer.  I love this feature and I’m so glad that the developer included it in the app. It’s most definitely one of my favorite features and one that you should check out if you have an AppleTV.

Of course, if you don’t have a Kelby Training membership than none of this really matters to you but I can honestly say that you are missing out on some of the best training on the planet. If you are a member and have an i-device, follow this link to get your hands on this fantastic app.

    The only thing that has prevented me from signing up for these courses in the past was the lack of offline viewing. I’ve never really understood why that hasn’t been allowed, but I assumed once the jump was made to the iPad this would be a no brainer.

    Sadly this seems not to be the case, which is just baffling to me. Maybe I’m missing a really obvious reason here, but surely I’m not the only one who might want to view these videos while away from WiFi? Streaming them over 3G isn’t really practical either from a quality or price perspective – not to mention the segment of non-3G WiFi owners.

    Thinking out loud here, is this perhaps an effort to stop pirating? But then again, I’m sure anyone so inclined can rip the videos off the site anyway, with enough technical savvy.

    Hmm…maybe the group have done some market research which shows the majority of subscribers watch at home. But then again, of course they would have watched at home as there hasn’t been an iOS app until now.

    I’m out of ideas – Jeff, as you seem to have links to the group, can you shed any light on this?

    Downloaded the app last night and stayed up way too late playing with it. Really excellent stuff. Kelby Training keeps getting better and better. (I had to check out your class of course. Looks great on the big screen.)

    For some reason my question about offline viewing got deleted. No idea why, so let me try again – does anyone know why Kelby Training does not allow offline viewing?

    The FAQ says “If you’re not a techie (and we don’t blame you) that means they can only be played when you’re online…”, implying they don’t have anything against techies watching offline, but don’t want to open this up to the rest of the customer base.

    Just in case my last comment got deleted as it was interpreted as being provocative in some way, please can be I clear this is not my intention – the course content looks fantastic and I would love to become a customer, it’s just this aspect that’s stopping me.

    Maybe I should phrase the question the other way around – does anybody know, particularly now the courses have found their way onto iOS, if there are any future plans to enable offline viewing?

      Ed, I think the biggest reason is that the file sizes that would need to be downloaded are pretty large, especially for the iPad. The other thing is that, allowing the videos to be downloaded means they would end up on a Torrent site in a split second. It helps protect their content and helps them keep their prices lower for you.

        Thanks for the reply Jeff, and sorry again for the unnecessary multiple comments. I can understand the pirating concern, sounds like there won’t be any offline viewing in the future then. That’s a pity, I’d love to sign up, but I guess you can’t have everything.

    Am I all alone or is the video glitchy at best when viewing with ur iPad???its to the point I might not sign back up. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
