Anyone who lives in the Washington DC area knows what a special event it is when the cherry blossoms bloom around the Tidal Basin. It’s like a giant fluffy cloud of pink that heralds the arrival of Spring. It’s also one of the most special times for local photographers to capture this amazing, and sometimes fleeting event.

This year, the experts have predicted that the trees will be at peak bloom from March 29th thru April 4th. Of course we all know that a few strong winds and some rain can really make that one week shrink down to just a couple of magical days. It’s what makes it all the more special when you can get that great shot of the blooms in all their glory.
But the blooms aren’t the only thing worth shooting this time of the year. For the past 44 years, the Smithsonian has hosted their kite festival to coincide with the coming of the cherry blossoms. Starting this year, they have turned over the festival so that it is actually part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. It’s scheduled for Sunday, March 27th, If you have never seen the Kite Festival, you are in for a real treat as kites large and small fill the skies around the Washington Monument grounds. It really is something to see. Mix that with some beautiful blooms and you have a very target-rich environment for your camera.
So mark your calendar, charge your batteries, and get there early. Maybe I’ll see you there.
