Friday Roundup – New Books and More

Alright gang, it’s Friday and I’m looking forward to a long weekend of relaxing, visiting with family, and maybe raising my Black-Ops rank a little bit so I don’t embarrass my team like I did the other night. Here’s a few notables to start off your weekend.

♦ My buddy Rafael “RC” Concepcion has written a fantastic book for photographers that are interested in getting their images on the Web. It’s called Get Your Photography on the Web: The Fastest, Easiest Way to Show and Sell Your Work and it’s about to hit book stores everywhere. I was privileged to get a sneak peek at the book and I can tell you that there is no one out there giving out this kind of information. Whether you are thinking of starting a photo blog or want to get your portfolio online to show off your stuff and maybe generate some business or sales, this book will show you how. RC covers everything from finding a domain name and hosting service to social networking in a fantastic step-by-step process that will have you looking like a pro in no time. You can find the book at Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, and wherever good photography books are sold.

♦ Speaking of Borders Books, I got some kind of sad news in my email inbox yesterday. It seems as though Borders is having a tough time in these current economic times, which has forced them to file for Chapter 11. They are going to be closing a number of stores throughout the country and I am hoping and praying that my local store isn’t one of them. I really love browsing there and so I felt it my duty to give them a visit last night and buy a book. Of course I had to make the mandatory run through the photo books to see if they had any of my books in stock and lo and behold, they had every single one, including my brand new Exposure book. Actually, they had almost all of the books in the Snapshots to Great Shots series except the D7000 book. I also felt it necessary to help them reorganize their shelves a bit. You know, as a service to the consumers. If you are a fan of book stores, do yourself and everyone else a favor and give them some business every now and then. I mean, where else can you sip a good latte, do some free wi-fi surfing, and find a good book.

♦ If you are in the Houston area and use Lightroom you are in for a treat. My buddy Matt Kloskowski, author of the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips blog, is taking the Photoshop Lightroom Live Tour to the George R. Brown Convention Center on March 9th. I have been to a couple of the Lightroom seminars and I never fail to learn some new stuff. Matt is a Lightroom laureate and he has a fantastic day planned for all those that attend. Not only that but every attendee receives a seminar workbook, digital downloads, a keyboard shortcut guide, and a copy of Photoshop User magazine. So mark your calendar and then head on over to the KelbyTraining website and click on the Seminars link to register and get all the details.

♦ If you have your images on the web, you might want to give this article by Haje Jan Kamps a read. It’s a great article on copyrights and how infringements harm you as a photographer. It’s good stuff and well worth the read. You can find it over at

♦ Have you ever wished that you had a lens that would shoot at f/64 so that you could get crazy sharp focus in your macro work? Well, I don’t have any new lens to tell you about but my buddy Mike Meyer has a great technique to achieve some fantastic macro depth of field by combining multiple exposures in Photoshop. You read all about it on his blog, Mike Meyer Photo Pro.

That’s all for this week. I hope you have a great President’s Day weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday.

  1. If you have a Borders Gift card, use it as soon as possible. If they do declare bankruptcy, the card value is likely to vanish.

  2. I read Rafael’s book yesterday, and it’s excellent for anyone wanting to set up a photography blog on WordPress using his guidelines. Couldn’t have been better.

  3. Jeff,
It looks like the Tyson’s Corner Borders store will close – the full list is available at
I switched to Barnes & Noble a while ago and love the Nook Color. Scott’s “Lightroom 3” looks great on it, and I’m really looking forward to reading RC’s book on the Nook Color as soon as it becomes available.

Best wishes and have a great week!

    • Darin, thanks for forwarding the link to the address. I was really happy to see that my store is not on the chopping block (at least for the time being).
