I have been waiting for this one for awhile now.  The folks at Unified Color have finally released the Mac version of their HDR software for the Mac OS.  HDR PhotoStudio has been available for Windows users for quite some time and there has been promise of a Mac release and now I can’t wait to get my hands on it and give it a try.  I know a couple of people that have been using it and getting some fantastic results but since I work primarily on my Mac I didn’t want to commit until they released a version that would fit in with the rest of my image editing workflow.  it just never made sense to have all of my images on my Mac except for the ones that I wanted to perform HDR processing on.

So why have I been waiting for HDR PhotoStudio?  Well, more accurate color for one thing.  Supposedly the color renditions that come out of the processing are much more accurate and faithful to original colors in the scene.  Many other HDR programs  can change the color to make things more vivid and sometimes over-saturated.  Unified Color’s unique halo reduction slider is another.  Sometimes I have to sacrifice values in my HDR processing to keep halos from occurring.  I have really found this to be a problem when working with HDR images with large, blue skies.  Being able to remove the halos on a slider is extremely attractive to me and I can’t wait to see how well it works.

I will be getting my hands on a copy when I get back from my trip and I can’t wait to try it out.  I will be sure to write a review after I have had some time to fully explore the software.  If you don’t want to wait for me, and I can’t see why you would, then go to Unified Color’s website and download a trial version. You need to be running an Intel Macintosh 2.5 GHz dual core CPU with 2GB minimum RAM (4GB is recommended) running Mac OS 10.5.x (Leopard) or Mac OS 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).  Also, I have been told that you can purchase it for $99 for a limited time ( that’s 50 bucks off the regular price) so download the trial version and, if you like it, don’t wait to buy it.

I’ve been trying this demo version for a while this morning. Can’t say I like it mainly because is violates Mac UI conventions big time. The manual is clearly a work in progress with numerous mistakes and omissions. Cute icons rather that clear English words to describe functions. Perhaps the greatest drawback for me is the lack of a dynamic histogram like Photomatix that allows immediate feedback on the adjustments you have made. It’s hard for me to understand what icon to click to get the effect I want and to see how changes affect the histogram. Porting from Windoze to Mac requires rethinking the UI. Sorry to say that HDR PhotoStudio for the Mac has a way to go. I’ll wait.

Hey Jeff, stay in San Diego. If you haven’t heard we are about to get slammed with two feet of snow. After I try some Anselesque HDR I’ll swing by and shovel your driveway :) Stay warm!!!
