This isn’t really a photography sort of thing but I just thought it was so cool that I had to share it with you.  This past weekend as I was looking for something on the Internet, I came across the coolest web-based application that I have seen in some time.  The site is called FontCapture and their trick pony is that they can create a font from your handwriting without ever having to download any software.  That’s right, it’s all web-based and it’s 100% free.  The only catch is that you need to have a printer and scanner to make it all come together.

So here’s how it works.  First you need to download the template, which is in PDF format and then print it.  The template is where you will write all of the necessary characters that will be included in your personal font.  Once printed, you simply get a dark pen (I used a fine tip Sharpie) and print each letter and special character in the appropriate boxes.

Once you have filled in the boxes, you will need to scan the template back into your computer as a JPEG or PNG file and then upload it back to the FontCapture site.  After a very short time, the newly created font appears on the screen and is ready to download.  The font can be installed on both Mac and PCs and instructions for doing so are provided.  For my Mac, I simply double-clicked the downloaded file and then clicked the Install Font button.  That’s all there was to it.

So here is the only problem with the downloaded font.  You really can’t use it for anything like email or web use.  That’s because the computer that receives the message or looks at the web page would need to have the same font installed to be able to see it as you do.  You can however use it in Photoshop as a graphic design element.  Or, if you are like my kids, you could use it for your homework papers that are supposed to be handwritten.

Whatever your intended use, I think you will find that this is one of the best free web apps out there.

I found this site awhile back and had fun making some handwriting fonts. Just a quick comment on the current and future capabilities of using such a font on the web. Though it is not widely supported, you can actually have the latest Firefox display custom font-face using CSS3. Because this is being implemented as a web standard, eventually the main browser options will support it. Though as with any option, it will get abused (read that as the blink tag), there will be some fun and practical uses for this ability.

Jeremy, I had no idea that CSS3 would allow user fonts to be visible by page viewers. That’s pretty cool. I do wonder if it would slow down page loads since the font would have to be downloaded along with the page content.

You could use a tablet and write it on the computer.

There was one of these available a while back that you had to send in your info, pay for it, etc., but this free version looks pretty slick! Thanks for the review, I’ll try it out :-)
