It’s Friday once more and that means I will give you some stuff to check out this weekend as you relax with a big cup of coffee and your computer.

Air Force One – the hits just keep on coming -

If you enjoyed Scott Kelby’s little gaf at the Air Force One photo blunder yesterday (seen here), you aren’t alone.  It seems that the idea of using photoshop instead of a scary live fly-over has really caught on.  The Daily News is encouraging citizens to create their own AFO-NY fly-over scenes to go along with the ones they came up with.  Pretty funny stuff.  Check it out here.

The Bigger Picture -

My favorite museum in the world, the Smithsonian Institute (actually a collection of museums) has a blog dedicated to discussing the deeper meaning and history of images in its collections.  One favorite was the recent post about the watchmaker that scribed a secret message inside of Lincoln’s pocketwatch.  The story is accompanied by macro shots of the message that was etched on the watch’s in workings.  If you are a history buff, you’re sure to find something here to love.  You can find The Bigger Picture here.

When Everyone Else is Working -

My buddy, Mike Palmer, has started up a new group for any of you DC-based photographers who might have some free time in the middle of the day.  It’s a meetup group for photographers that can not make it to evening and weekend meetups.  So if you find you have some time on your hands during the week and would like to meet some other local photographers for shooting, discussions, and just hanging out, check out Mike’s Meetup Group page.

Cooliris for your Hard Drive -

Cooliris is perhaps one of the coolest browser apps ever made for photography.  It allows you to quickly view images from a website in a “wall of photos” configuration and then quickly move through the images and zoom in to see more detail.  It’s hard to explain but once you start using it, it will forever change the way you look at large collections of images on the web (thing of a Google Images search or Flickr pool).  Well now you can use this technology to view all of the images on your own computer.  I was shocked at just how fast it was able to find my pictures.  It looks for the standard locations first like iPhoto collections or your My Pictures folder but you can direct it to any folder you choose.  It is very slick and operates from your favorite web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari) on both Mac and PC machines.  For more information and a download link, check out the Cooliris website.

Ah Photoshop, is there anything you can’t do? -

Finally today, check out this collection of great images that have been masterfully crafted in Photoshop.  Many of them are from advertisements and each and every one is just creative beyond a level I could never hope to achieve.  I’ll just have to settle for admiring the skills of others.  You can find the collection here.

That’s all for today.  Have a great weekend and happy surfing.

    Hi Jeff,

Don’t want to nitpick but I work at the Smithsonian. It’s actually the Smithsonian Institution (not Institute.) Small thing but it bugs us.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

    Andy

Wow, I love Cooliris, thanks for the link!

    Hi Jeff-

I work at the Smithsonian Photography Initiative, which hosts THE BIGGER PICTURE blog–thanks so much for the great link love! So glad you enjoyed the Lincoln post. We’ll continue to post about all kinds of image collections across the Smithsonian, and for May and June we’ll also have guest bloggers focusing on astronomy and photography.

Appreciate the link to Cooliris–it’s an incredible way to visually browse all those photos hiding on a hard drive!
