JPG Magazine – Stop the Presses

jpgThis isn’t breaking news but in all the rushing around that came with the new year, I hadn’t really had a chance to look into this story.  It seems that the publishers of JPG announced in a farewell blog post on January 2nd that JPGmag.com would shut down as of Jan. 5th, 2009.  I was saddened to see this news because this represented the failure of one of the truly unique photography magazines to come along in quite some time.  JPG was different because all of the content that filled the pages was generated by the photo community.  All of the content was submitted via the website and then voted on by other readers.  In the end though, the failing economy just couldn’t produce the advertising revenue to continue operations.

But wait, is it really dead?  As I said, the web page was supposed to close down as of Jan. 5 but last night I decided to stop by and see if there was some sad farewell message posted on the site, but to my surprise, it seemed as though it was business as usual.  There are upcoming themes posted for futer issues and all of the links are still active, including the upload features for stories and images.  So I decided to stop by the blog to see if there was perhaps an update.  To my surprise and delight, it seems as though some last minute wheeling and dealing has been taking place over the weekend and it seems as though some deals may be in the works to save the operation.  I offer my support and good wishes to the folks at JPG for getting things turned around and hopefully breathing some new life into this valuable publication.  Stay tuned…

I had mixed emotions about the (possible) demise to JPG. I have been a subscriber since the 3rd issue and loved the magazine. I saw it change hands in ownership (controversial and bitter depending on who’s side you take) and evolve. However, the latter is what forced me not to renew. The new owners were starting to steer the magazine away from its roots. I used to get my magazine in the mail before it hit the stands-that changed. I never got “Blowers” (those annoying cards in magazines that try to get you to subscribe-you know, the ones that make you immediately riffle through the mag to remove and recycle) they started showing up a year ago. I started to see “Guest-Celebrity” contributors and themes from other invited individuals. JPG was about the people by the people. I also wonder how much of JPG’s revenue went to subsidize the travel magazine it tried to get off the ground and how much this contributed to the demise of this once excellent publication.

Ah, I see they have “multiple buyers” interested, which means the magazine could go in any direction once it sells. I hope it is a positive thing for them this time around and not a change for the worse!
