This isn’t breaking news but in all the rushing around that came with the new year, I hadn’t really had a chance to look into this story. It seems that the publishers of JPG announced in a farewell blog post on January 2nd that JPGmag.com would shut down as of Jan. 5th, 2009. I was saddened to see this news because this represented the failure of one of the truly unique photography magazines to come along in quite some time. JPG was different because all of the content that filled the pages was generated by the photo community. All of the content was submitted via the website and then voted on by other readers. In the end though, the failing economy just couldn’t produce the advertising revenue to continue operations.
But wait, is it really dead? As I said, the web page was supposed to close down as of Jan. 5 but last night I decided to stop by and see if there was some sad farewell message posted on the site, but to my surprise, it seemed as though it was business as usual. There are upcoming themes posted for futer issues and all of the links are still active, including the upload features for stories and images. So I decided to stop by the blog to see if there was perhaps an update. To my surprise and delight, it seems as though some last minute wheeling and dealing has been taking place over the weekend and it seems as though some deals may be in the works to save the operation. I offer my support and good wishes to the folks at JPG for getting things turned around and hopefully breathing some new life into this valuable publication. Stay tuned…
