I was working on my book this past weekend, Canon 50D: From Snapshots to Great Shots, and I got into a piece on urban photography (yes, I do realize that was a blatant plug for the book).  Anyway, what I came to realize while I was writing is that shooting in an urban environment is probably one of the best exercises for improving composition.  There is so much subject matter available in such a small geographic area that you could practice just about any aspect of composition.  As I was thinking this, I started looking through some shots from past photowalks to see if I was practicing what I preached.  I was happy to see that I had made a practice of using different compositional tools in my outings.  Things like angles, colors, patterns, leading lines, etc.  So next time you feel the need to improve or practice your photographic skills, head for the nearest city or town and see if you can’t find something worth shooting.  Here’s a few ideas for you.

    Jeff,
I loved these shots! As a mostly urban shooter myself, I found them to be very inspirational. They really made me want to head out and get shooting right away. Thanks for sharing!

Good and very valid point, Jeff. I think that’s one of the things that makes photowalks so successful. There are natural subjects of interest that allow photographers of all skill levels to focus on.

NIce photo selections; I recognize a few, and I’m glad to see them again!

    Have a great holiday.

Ah grasshopper, you are weak and will hurt yourself if you choose to fight me. Crab Claws huh, well I’ve eaten a lot of crab claws in my life so I am not afraid. You should be afraid, be very afraid.
