My buddy Mike emailed me this weekend to tell me that my book is listed for pre-sale at two of the big online retail booksellers. So I guess I can officially speak about it now that it is gearing up for sale. I am still working on some of the material and will have it all wrapped up by the end of the month for the publisher to do their thing. I’m really excited as this is my first book, but not my last (more on that in a bit).

So here’s how it all came about. As you may have seen in previous posts, I had noticed that there really weren’t any photography books that were teaching photography as much as they were photo processing. This is especially true in the camera specific market. I spend a lot of time answering photography questions from readers and I wanted to do something to help the new DSLR owner move past the basics of point and shoot cameras and really learn about photography; more specifically, photography with their new camera. It’s not just about what the camera features do or how they work, but when and how to use them to create better photographs. So it’s not just a re-hash of the owners manual but a resource to improve the reader’s photography knowledge and skills.

So why start with the Canon 50D?

Because it’s a great camera. It is feature rich and will deliver great images with almost all of the features available in the professional level DSLRs on the market. It a perfect camera for anyone that wants to move up from the automatic world of the point and shoot and start working on creating better photos.

So why not one of the other new cameras in the pro-sumer market?

It’s a matter of timing.  I wanted to be able to write about a camera that just came out and that will still be new and viable by the time the book comes out.  I think this is the case for the 50D.  The next book to follow will be the Nikon D90.  My goal is to create a camera-specific series that will cover the new DSLR cameras as they are introduced into the market.

So can we expect to see a Canon 5D MarkII or Nikon D3X book to follow?

Probably not at this time.  I am thinking that if you are spending that kind of money on a camera that you are probably an advanced amateur or even a working pro.  My goal is to help those that want to rise to that level by learning the principles of photography with their own camera.
