That would be the turkey that I am going to be eating on Thursday, not the country of.  Yes, it is that time of year again.  Time to bring out the slightly larger pants and check to see that there is an extra hole left in the belt, just in case.  I am leaving for my short Thanksgiving Holiday so I will be keeping this rather short.  I will try and post throughout the rest of the week but the tryptophan (that stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy) might just get the best of me.  So before I start drueling in anticipation, let’s get on with it.

♦ Terry White, the Adobe Guru and keeper of the great Terry’s Tech Blog, had an interesting post the other day about how he was having a difficult time getting things printed to his camera format.  He actually got turned on to Costco’s printing services that offer an 8×12 inch print.  This reminded me of my post last year in which I stirred up some dust over the strange paper sizes that we sometimes have to deal with and how there are no papers that match conventional frame sizes (I’m not going to get into the whole deal now but please feel free to check it out for yourself right here).  The reason that this got me thinking was how Terry now had to try and find a frame for his 8×12 inch print.  Another difficult task to be sure.

But here is the good news.  There might just be some changes coming about in the framing industry.  The other day I was browsing around Michaels craft store and, for the very first time, I actually found 13×19 inch frames.  I bought 2 of them, just on the off chance that it was some manufacturing fluke.  Let’s hope not.  I would love to be able to buy some 16×22 inch frames that are matted to 12×18.  I can get them from custom framing shops but if they start mass-producing them, it will bring the costs down considerable.  The next time you are in your local frame store, look around and see if they are stocking ISO standard sizes in their normal stock and let me know.  Maybe we can start a petition or something.

♦Arthur Agin, a veteran of several of my photowalks, wrote me an email with an idea to get a group together to shoot the Inauguration fireworks in DC.  I hadn’t really given it any thought but it does sound like a fun idea.  Arthur was quick to point out a couple of possible flaws in his plan.

  • It will probably be COLD
  • The weather may not cooperate
  • And most important, we aren’t sure yet if there are even going to be fireworks.

So do me a favor and drop me a comment if you A.) are interested in shooting the fireworks, and B.) if you actually know if there are any planned for Inauguration Day.

Okay, that’s all I have for today.  Sorry for the brevity of the post but I have some packing to do.  If you are traveling this holiday, please be safe and have a fantastic Thanksgiving Day.  For all of you that don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, Have a great Thursday…now where are those big pants?

  1. For what it’s worth, Light Impressions has been selling “Digital Solutions” framing products for a while — that is, precut frames and precut matts designed for 12×18 prints on 13×19 paper:

When I penciled it out, it seemed like the pre-cut, pre-hinged double matt was only around a dollar more per print than it would cost for me to do it by hand. Which in my time-crunched world is essentially free.

As a resident of the Wash DC area for my entire life, and a witness to these events for many years, I thought i would chime in. There are a couple of websites for inauguration events – http://www.inaugural.senate.gov (provides a history of past events) and a link to the Presidential Inauguration Committee (not much information now as to any official events yet).

Historically the events are as follow:
    Morning Worship Service
    Procession to the Capitol
    VP Swearing In
    President Swearing In
    Inaugural Address
    Departure of the Outgoing President
    Presidential Lucheon
Inaugural Parade from Capitol to the White House
Inaugural Ball(s) – there have been as many as 14 balls for one inauguration

Other than the Inaugural Balls, everything else is during daylight hours, but no mention of fireworks to this point.

Search the websites frequently as changes could be posted at any time. Enjoy the festivities!

  3. I just had some large panoramic images printed at the larges size available from my lab, which heppend to be 12″ x 36″. I realized after the fact just how hard it is to find a frame (and mattes) that size. It looks like I’m going to have to be a much larger rectangular frame and cut it down to size. Now that’s annoying!

On the framing note, check out

I think this is what I want for Christmas this year, we spend tons of money on gear, software, gadgets and yet we fight the process on the final presentation

We just need to learn how to mat our images and frame to the closest standard size.

    Jeff,

Thanks for publicizing the fireworks event. You have a much wider audience than me. I’ll have more information on my website as we get closer. I haven’t seen any mention yet of Fireworks on any of the websites but they have happened during the last seven inaugurals.

As for unusual frames, I have gotten custom frames from an internet site, American Frame (www.americanframe.com). Their Econo-Wood line is a manageable price even when you add the mats and plexiglass.

    I love to print 8×12.
I have found a 12×16 frame at Michaels.
    I buy my 12×16 mats with 7.5 x 11.5 Windows at matcutter.com

The frames are black metal. I buy them up when I find them

I don’t know about this time around, but there were fireworks before Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997. They launched them from all over the city. Although it was a neat experience, we froze our tails off. The low that evening was in the low teens or high single digits, as I recall.
