Something that I have noticed over my past few photowalks is the number of people that have started bringing their kids along.  Bu they aren’t just there as passive observers, they are actually shooting right along with the rest of us.  I had the pleasure of taking my youngest son with me on one of the Scott Kelby World Wide Photowalks back in August so I did what every photographer dad would do, I stuck a camera in his hand.  Well this past week, I brought both my boys with me and once again gave them cameras.  My oldest son (he’s 12) got to use my Nikon D80 and last night I finally got around to checking out his shots.  There were the usual collection of happy snap photos but buried amongst the pictures of his brother and his feet and the other shots you might expect to see with a 12 year old behind the wheel were some really great shots.  You can rest assured that I will continue to bring them along on my future photowalks and try and nurture their skills and hopefully passion for photography.  Here are a few of his better shots from Sunday.

  1. Jeff, you should be very proud. These images are quite wonderful.

I’m excited as my oldest daughter turns 3 in December and will be receiving her first camera!

I’ll be taking her on photowalks as well.

I love taking my kids on photowalks. Mostly, it’s been my 5 yr old son with a little compact 110 film camera in his hands. He recently took an interest in my old Minolta dSLR, and he informed me that he was going to use it next time we photowalk (which is kinda funny because the kid is around 40 pounds and the camera weighs half as much as he does). So I figure, what the heck — I’ll let him tote it around and use it next time. My 4 yr old daughter has also recently taken an interest in cameras (mostly our digital P&S), so I’ll probably bring her along one of these times too.

What’s really funny is when I don’t bring the kid, I show up at the photowalk, and my buddies get all bummed out that it’s just me this time. So yeah… kids are fun to bring on photowalks.

He’s got a good eye! Definitely something to be encouraged. I remember when I wasn’t much older than that, and I couldn’t always afford film for my camera (my dad’s Argus A5), but I’d take the camera and the lightmeter out with me anyway and make pictures, going through the process of determining exposure, focus, composition, etc.

Great shots! What lens did he use?

    That’s one of the things I love about photography – it’s a great family obsession^H^H^H^H^H hobby ;-)

I often take my older kids (now aged 8 and 10) with me, and they love taking photos.

Definitely a bunch of winning shots there! I’d say the top photograph is perfect.

Wow, he took some great pics! Fascinating to see the perspective from a youngster, how he sees the world and what is interesting for him.

    Jeff,
Good for your kids and lucky for you. It’s always fun to bring family into something you enjoy. You’re building great memories for them. I’m frequently joined by my son-in-law when I go shooting, and we have a blast….course he’s older than 12 ;-) We both enjoyed Harper’s Ferry.

Jeff – it only gets better with your kids. All of my boys, one now 44 and the other two in their 30s, are photographers. It’s a wonderful surprise the way that things we do with them when they are young become their own passions. It seems to me that the key is their being in control of their own journeys.

  11. Impressive. That is very cool that your kids are taking an interest. It looks like he’s got a natural eye for composition. Hopefully its something he continues to find enjoyment from. BTW Happy Birthday Jeff!

Kids and cameras make a great match! We have 3 kids and the 5 of us often get out and shoot. It’s a great way to deepen the bonds, have something to talk about, and have fun together! In fact, this month we’re featured in the Hagerman Featherless Flyer – here’s a shortcut http://www.friendsofhagerman.com/
Great photos from your son too! Keep him encouraged and help him along when he asks for it, you’ll never regret it! We haven’t!

  13. Those are some nice shots. My youngest son has also developed an interest in photography and has taken over my last camera when I got my D60. He now is taking pictures at school fundraiser functions to raise money for school activities. They have done photo booths and other shots of school stuff like dances and costume parties. He has even started shooting videos with the camera too.

Your son has a wonderful eye. I’m sure you’ll help him culture it.

My oldest son has his own camera. Now, it’s not a D80 and it says Fisher-Price on the front, but I am impressed with some of his compositions. The camera isn’t great, but it is wonderful to see the world from the viewpoint of a four-year-old.
