Today I received a new toy for my shooting pleasure.  My buddy over at Canon hooked me up with a brand new 50D to play with for awhile.  I have a project that I’m working on and this baby is just what the doctor ordered.  I know what you’re thinking, “Hey Jeff, aren’t you a Nikon shooter?”  Well, yes, I usually am but a great camera is a great camera and this thing pretty much ROCKS!  I have spent the past couple of months shooting with a Canon XSi and while it is a great camera in its own right, the 50D just felt right from the moment I wrapped my fingers around it.  It is not a light camera, weighing in at slightly over 25 ozs. but I like a camera that has some heft.  It just feels solid and well built.  Some of the great features of the 50D include:

  • 15.1 MP CMOS sensor
  • DIGIC 4 image processor
  • 3″ High-Def display
  • 12,800 ISO
  • 6.3 FPS shooting (JPEG)
  • 5 Focus modes
  • 3 Live View modes

I’m going to really enjoy getting to know this camera and will be putting it through its paces over the next few weeks.  I will offer up my opinion on the camera and its features throughout the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Hey Jeff, you are right about a great camera. Most of the cameras out there today are all really good so it’s just a personal preference about what you want and need in a camera and what manufacturer makes it. My buddy used to say if you think a Hasselblad will make you a better photographer, buy a Bronica and put tape over the name. Just because you have a Gibson Les Paul doesn’t make you a great guitarist, just a wealthy one. So remember: It’s the photographer that makes a great picture, the camera just helps to capture it.

Could you not have done the project with your Nikon’s? I am interested to see how using a Canon will change your ability to capture images. Inquiring Nikonians need to know = )

    Just poking fun – = )

    What would the Nikonians think?

As a Nikon guy, I would hope that Nikon would release a D400 in Feb 2009 along with their “Really Big” announcement. But I have to agree with you, the 40D felt really decent when I tried one, so I’m sure the 50D is even better.

  6. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the 50D. I’m a Canon guy, and all my friends are Nikon guys. After reading a great number of reviews about the D700 I’ve started thinking about becoming a Nikon guy…..my next camera is on the radar screen and it’s between the 5D and D700. Leaning toward the D700, and that means a lot of new glass to buy….

Maybe you’ll tell me it’s ok to be a Canon guy!
