Many thanks to everyone that responded to yesterday’s post about photo book publishing.  I received some great feedback that spoke highly of the Mpix service I wrote about as well as some suggestions for a few others.  In the coming days I will try an review several of the services to help you (and me) decide which is the best option for printing a photo book.  I will begin tomorrow with the fairly new Blurb printing service which was highly recommended by several readers.  I will also take a look at LuLu, MyPublisher, VioVio, and iPhoto.  If you can think of any others along the way, please pass them along for consideration.

Outstanding. I was planning to make a photobook or 2 from my wedding photos. I can’t wait to hear your take on these services.

My black and white photos for a book.

Some of my early photos were printed in the dark room, and I have slides taken of those images. Can I send you a combination of slides and digital photos (taken when I began digital photography) on a CD? Will you be doing offset printing?

    Thanks.

You should try SmileBooks (www.smilebooks.com). I am really impressed with their quality. I ordered photo books from other online services before and this was by far the best one. No more grainy pictures and falling out pages anymore. Their software is very flexible and easy to use. With the assistant you can create your book in 5 minutes. You don’t need to upload pictures, which is very time saving. You can browse your pictures directly from your computer. If you want you can change anything you want. The layouts and covers are fully customizable. What I really liked that you can add, move, resize, and rotate picture and text boxes very easily. They have tons of backgrounds to choose from and you can also use your own pictures as backgrounds on single or double pages.

Pricing is reasonable too. They have four sizes:
    -Pocket (5.5×5″) : From $9.95
    -Mini (8×8″): From $16.95
    -Classic (8×11″): From $19.95
    -Deluxe (12×12″): $68.95

They have a 30% voucher on their Facebook fan site (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/SmileBooks/42040218000?ref=ts) at the moment. The code is SB30.

Thanks for the heads up Jasmin. I did need to add that the SmileBooks software is not Mac compliant so you can only build books on a Windows computer.

My Publisher is a well designed and easy to use program with a wide variety of page options. When they have a promotion, the prices are very attractive. And the turn-around time is remarkable. Blurb, on the other hand has a frustratingly limited layout selection, a remarkably time- consuming creating process and clumsy operations. I-Photo is very good all-around but more expensive. My Publisher for some strange reason doesn’t offer printing on the back or flaps of its book jackets.

I’ve been searching for a supplier of high quality professional photobooks. Have tried photobox, blurb and upon searching and more searching, bookedimages.com sound very good. They’re based in the UK. They don’t seem to advertise their price, but if its reasonable, that’s who I’m going to try next.

I’ve used http://www.familymemories.com/ photo book software to create 5 books – the quality of the printing is amazing and I would fully recommend them for creating a coffee table book, wedding book, family photo book or whatever. Great stuff! Worth a good look when planning your photobook project.
