For those of you that stopped by yesterday (Friday) you might have noticed that my images were not working correctly with Lightbox. Lightbox is a great little piece of java script that overlays my images at their full resolution but does so on top of the current page. It also darkens the area outside of the image to isolate it. It is really a great little feature, when it is working. Unfortunately I had installed a plug-in that disabled the Lightbox so it took me a while to figure out exactly what was going on. Basically I just don’t know when to leave well enough alone. I did finally zero in on the problem and am happy to say that the Lightbox feature is back in business. Go ahead and click on the image below and give it a whirl (please let me know if it isn’t working for you).

Also this weekend, I have a new section of the blog over in the right side-bar. I now have a Top Posts section that highlights my top five most read postings. If you are new to the site, be sure to check out those posts to see just why they were so popular. It might be because I was being controversial in some way but hopefully it’s because they were chock full of some really interesting and useful content. Anyway, slide your mouse on over to the right and give them a read.

Finally, you might have seen this symbol rss_sm around and not really known what it was for. That is the symbol for RSS which stands for Really Simple Syndication. In other words, it is a way for people to subscribe to webpage content in a really easy way. Usually an RSS reader is used to download the content and allow you to read it at your leisure. The other great thing is that you can subscribe to lots of sites and read their updated content all from one spot which means that you don’t have to physically got to each site to see if it has been updated. Just subscribe in your reader and check in when you want to. The reader will do all of the heavy lifting. I use the Google Reader for all of my subscription needs and it just flat out rocks! If you don’t want to mess with a reader, you can also have my daily content delivered to you via email. Just go up to the link underneath my top banner image or click here. Go ahead and subscribe so you don’t miss another exciting post.

That’s it for this weekend, but I’ll have something new for your reader on Monday. Have a great weekend!

    Jeff,

Works for me also in IE. It also works ok in safari for Windows.

I used Lightbox for a while but found it had a conflict with other plug-ins that use Java or Flash, as did the “Slimbox” version. For example, Kimili Flash Embed that enables software like SlideShowPro, monoslideshow or NextGEN to run in Wordpress. I changed to “shutter reloaded” which gives a slightly different effect and the problems went away.

Didn’t work launching from AOL. did from safari, but it just enlarged it and put it on it’s own screen. great photo by the way…
didn’t understand what it’s supposed to do.

Question. Did you buy the cintiq 12″. I did. I need help setting up the buttons. any ideas where to look for suggestions? Never had a wacom tablet before, so this is all new to me.

Question (you are so good at helping us all….) other than bludomain.com, do you have any ideas for photography template sites that are fun, easy to navigate, easy to set up, for photographers?

would love to have a photowalk in boston….

Thanks for the info Mike. I am actually using a plug-in called iMP Auto Slimbox that automatically inserts the call-up script for the Lightbox code for all images that I want to Lightbox. The plug-in is no longer available or supported on any site but it is still pretty sweet. Anything that does the heavy lifting for me and keeps me from having to enter code is alright with me.

    Janet,
Thanks for the info. I don’t have AOL and am not sure of how much java script support they have built into their browser. I just bought a Cintiq for work but haven’t had a chance to play with it yet. I will see if I can hunt down some info for you. Terry White had a review and some info on his tech blog. You can find his Cintiq post here: Terry White’s Tech Blog As far as template sites go, you can also try: Enthosweb, and Template Monster.

I bypassed the whole Flash gallery site and created my own using simple html pages using Dreamweaver and then separate flash gallery pages created in Adobe Lightroom for the individual galleries. There are also some cool flash galleries that use Picasa hosted images. Check out these free Picasa galleries.

I hope that helps some. I will see if I can find out a little more on the Cintiq, or try and get mine set up so I can be of more help.

    Jeff,

I’m using Firefox on the PC and the Lightbox feature is working.

Also, good luck with the Photowalk. I’d like to participate but I’ll be out of town next weekend. I hope it’s successful enough to do again.

Finally, I’m glad you posted the lighthouse as the test shot. It’s an excellent shot – one of my favorites. The framing, counterposing the lighthouse and the threatening clouds works. The sharpness of detail serves the image, reinforcing the ominous tone and the depth of field. The colors really set the tone. The grayness of nature vs the bright white and full red of the manmade lighthouse suggests a conflict between the two. (Man vs nature; the lighthouse as a protector against the violence of the sea.) There is just one suggestion I’d make to improve the image.

I would tone down the blue of the sailcovers on the sailboat. They pop out brightly and create an emphasis of the minority that pulls the eye from the main subject, and in my opinion, weakens the composition. The blue is intense and beautiful, but distracting.

Google reader rocks! I’ve been RSSing your feed for many months now. It’s the only way for me to keep track of so many different websites. Thank you very much for providing an RSS feed! I don’t understand why other bloggers don’t do this.

    Hi Jeff,

    Can you help me?
I’m also using the Mandigo theme for my wordpress blog, but for some reason the Lightbox plugin is not working. Can you tell me what you did to make it work on your blog?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Luiz,
I am not using the Lightbox plug-in for my images. I went with a plug-in called Imp-Auto-Slimbox. Unfortunately the author of the plug-in has closed down his site so there is no support for it at all but I would be happy to send it to you if you like. The reason I chose it was that most of the other lightbox type applications required that I insert some kind of code. I am not a “code” person and the Imp plug-in automatically inserts code for the lightbox effect without me having to do anything but upload the image. The only problem I have found with the Imp plug-in is that other types of java code can disable it as seen in my posting above. Let me know if you would like to try the Imp-Auto-Slimbox and I will package it up and email it to you.

    Luiz,

I also wanted to use Lightbox with Mandigo. At first it didn’t work, but then I tried a small modification and it seems to work:
Open the source code of your page in any web browser. In the Headers section, copy the code that links to the lightbox javascripts. It starts with and ends with . Go to your Wordpress administration pannel and look for the “HTML Inserts” option related to the Mandigo theme. There, in the fist box, past the text you copied. Save. It works!

I know very little about web programming, but what this does is simply add the lightbox code AFTER the mandigo code. I don’t know why it has to be like this to work.

Thanks for posting that fix, and it does indeed work when using Lightbox and Mandigo theme, though it’s not appending the alt or description to the image when open? Did you work a fix out for that, as it would be better.

Well done on the find though

..and great site you have here Jeff
