Sorry for the lack of specifics on the upcoming Photowalk but I was not sure of all of the details myself so I didn’t want to put out any information that might need changing later and risk having someone miss out on the update.  After reading many of the comments, I can see that there are quite a few folks that are attending the pre-cons who would like to participate in the walk so I am going to try and make this work for them as well.  Since I want to end the shoot with some twilight shooting across the lake, and since most of the pre-cons end at 5:00 PM, I am going to set the start time for 5:30 PM.  From what I have been told, sunset occurs about 7:30 PM so this should allow ample time to walk the whole route and end up back near the lake at our starting point in plenty of time to catch the sunset.  For those of you that are attending a pre-con, the starting point is 13 miles from the Convention Center so I am hoping that the trip can be made in 30 minutes.  As for the starting/meeting location, why don’t we meet on the corner of East Robinson St. and South Eola Dr. (the southwest corner, closest to the lake).  I have created a route map that you can access online by clicking here.  If there are any Orlando locals that are planning on attending and have more information about the area (like parking and restaurants for after the walk, or anything at all, please share it in the comments section of this post).

Here is a Google Earth Map with the route drawn out on it.

Also, Jean-Francois O’Kane has offered to donate a PhotoMasterTarget for a drawing that one of you lucky photowalkers can win.  We can draw a name or number or something from a hat for one of you to win this great item.  The PhotoMasterTarget is a color calibration target that you shoot and then use to color balance your images.  It is collapsable and will fit like a glove into your camera bag.  For more information, check out Jean-Francois’ website over at TheStudioCoach.  Thanks Jean-Francois for your generous donation.

And remember folks, there is no fee for the walk, or to try and win the PhotoMasterTarget, and no registration, this is just a free get together for folks that love to shoot and chat about photography (I won’t even bring up the fact that it’s healthy for you, oops, too late). So grab your camera, put on your walking shoes, and come do a little shootin with some other Photoshop World attendees (and hopefully some locals photobugs too).

I coincidentally came across the original post for the orlando photowalk tonight. I am local to Orlando and look forward to the opportunity to participate in the photowalk. I have not shot at Lake Eola since I experimented with UV film for a photography class in high school. I wasn’t even aware that Photoshop World was coming to town ’til now. Anyone wanna sneak me an extra badge? :-P

As far as the area, there are many places to park around Lake Eola. I believe the meters are free after 6pm on weekdays. There are metered spots along the streets marked on the route map. I typically park on Eola Dr. near the playground on the east side of the lake. The parking along Central Blvd is also a good location.

The area near the intersection of Summerlin Ave and Central Blvd is known as Thornton Park. There are various restaurants, coffee shops and bars in this area which vary in price levels. For night life, there are many bars along Orange Ave, Church St and Wall Street Plaza. As a bonus, we would be there during happy hour. Ultimately, it depends on the type of location the group is interested in. I’m happy to try to answer any questions.

Daniel was right on, loads of stuff – the only thing I will add, is traffic can be a bit heavy that time of day.

    Jeff,

Orlando is known for a mouse and not its roads, even more so at rush hour. 30 minutes from the Convention Center to Lake Eola is not realistic. I4 at rush hour is a parking lot. Other routes such as Orange Blossom Trail (via Bee Line or 528) presents its own challenges as “The Trail” gets pretty congested and 528 is under construction with all sorts of delays at various times of the day. The same goes for the other north / south route Orange Avenue. Avoiding 528 and using Sand Lake road has all the traffic from people who know that 528 is under construction and use that instead. I know it is only about 13 miles but a more realistic time frame would be 45 minutes to an hour. Also depending on what is going on Downtown, parking can be a problem at Lake Eola requiring parking on side streets.

  4. Hey Jeff,
Great, and thanks for the link.
I’ll arrive at the arport around 11:30Am, get a car, and do 2 little stops on the way and will meet you there. I’ll have a target for you (forever) 1 for draw and one or two for trial… I realy can’t wait for this event. And maybe open a franchise and do a walk in my own town or on my running around the world.

    Thank you,

    Jean-Francois

After reading the route that you have suggested, I noticed a possible mistake. You said and I quote: “we meet on the corner of East Robinson St. and South Eola Dr.” but South Eola Dr. does not meet do you mean “North Eola Dr” and East Robinson?
If this is correct please let me know as I don’t know the area.

    Jeff,

In light of possible traffic and parking problems, especially for those of us in the pre-conference workshops, would it be possible to have a way to “catch up” with the group after it starts? Perhaps a few designated meeting locations along the route or by outlining the direction of travel on the map we could catch up by looking for a crowd of folks with cameras. I’m sure I speak for several by saying that I’m very excited about this photowalk and that it great to be doing this while in town for Photoshop World. Thanks again.

    Gary and Harold,
Thanks for the updates on the traffic and streets. I really couldn’t start the walk any later than 5:30 or it would be dark before we finished. As for the start location, whatever intersection is at the northeast corner of the lake is where we will start. Unfortunately, being from out of town puts me at the mercy of the map makers so thanks for clarifying this.

    Robbie,
I would think that you could pick up the group anywhere along the route. Maybe at the southwest corner of the lake or even over at the Church Street Station. We should be an easy group to spot, just look for the swarm of paparazzi-type folks. Chances are it will be us, unless maybe Britney is visiting the station around the same time.

The Public Transit station downtown Orlando looks great lit up at night. You can also hop rides on the free downtown circulator (LYMMO). Also check out http://www.downtownorlando.com as they have newsletters to tell you about things going on. Hamburger Mary’s is a definite stop!
