I dropped by the DPReviews website the other day only to find something a little disturbing.  It seems that the Department of Transportation has enacted a ban on loose Lithium Ion batteries in checked baggage.  This is of special concern to photographers that like to carry a few extra power cells in their luggage.  The new regulation, which went into effect on January 1st 2008, dictate that loose Lithium cells may not be packed in checked baggage under any circumstances – batteries installed in equipment are unaffected.  This also includes those Lithium AA batteries that I love to use in my flashes.  You can carry your extra batteries in your carry-on luggage.  They must however be stored in their original packaging or even separate plastic bags.  To read more about these new restrictions, check out the TSA SafeTravel website.
